Behind the Counter: Cartridge World / Suffield

A conversation with owner Rob Wilson.

Founded in 1988, Cartridge World has grown into the world's largest dedicated specialty retailer of ink and toner printer cartridges, with over 650 stores in the U.S. and Canada and 1,700 stores in 60 other countries.

Robert Wilson, owner of Cartridge World / Suffield, retired from military service in 2009 after a distinguished 26-year career and opened a Cartridge World franchise in April 2010 in Enfield. He moved the business to Suffield in 2012.

Patch asked Wilson to tell us some more about his business, and here's what he had to say:

Patch: What services do you offer at your company?

Wilson: Whether you have a printer in your business or at home, Cartridge World / Suffield can provide you with quality ink and toner cartridges, backed with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Cartridge World brand ink and toner cartridges are remanufactured to the highest specifications to produce a reliable product consumers and businesses expect. In addition to the tremendous savings, the environmental benefits are fantastic as millions of printer cartridges are reused and saved from going into the landfill every year. Unserviceable cartridges are processed for recycling in an ISO 14001 certified program further helping our customers and promoting environmental responsibility. I’ve recently added printing capabilities, business cards to billboards, flyers to gallery prints and photographs.

Patch: Why did you decide to open in Suffield, and what made you interested in your field?

Wilson: I wanted to be more a part of my hometown community. Like most folks, I became tired of paying so much for new printer cartridges, and with two kids in school printing reports and projects, it seemed like I was buying new cartridges every other week. Researching the field, I found several companies that offered refilling franchise business models. What set Cartridge World apart in addition to manufacturer and cartridge specific inks and toner was the development of cleaning and testing technologies that weed out defective cartridges prior to refilling, thereby increasing customer satisfaction.

Patch: Do you have a business mantra you live by?

Wilson: Focus on customer service and satisfaction, not just a sale.

Patch: Can you tell us about your business background? What did you do before you opened your business? Have you owned other businesses in the past? Any notable awards?

Wilson: This is my first business, and I received a National Marketing award in 2011.

Patch: Finish this sentence. When I'm not working I'm...

Wilson: When I'm not working, I enjoy doing things outdoors.
