Windsor Locks Canal Trail, Park Beautified

Suffield High School students and volunteers from across the Farmington Valley helped improve the Windsor Locks Canal trail.

’s Interact Club planted eleven winterberry bushes along the Windsor Locks Canal trail on April 28. At the same time volunteers from across the Farmington Valley picked up trash and recyclables along northern portions of the trail and Canal Road.

The Friends of the Canal are very grateful to both groups for their efforts.
The winterberry bushes will supply food for migrating birds. More than 240 bird species pass through the Connecticut River Valley. Of particular interest is the pair of nesting eagles residing near the trail, just south of the Suffield town line.

The Windsor Locks entrance to the trail remains locked to insure that the eagles can raise their young successfully. The trail south of the Stony Brook aqueduct is also closed.
The volunteers from the Farmington Valley beautified the park area, northern trail sections and Canal Road itself. At least ten garbage bags full of rubbish were gathered and taken to the dump. The park and trail has a carry-in, carryout trash policy. The Friends volunteers greatly appreciate visitors carrying their litter out of the park. As always, dog waste should be removed from public use areas.
