3. The National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) began promoting the celebration of family caregivers in 1994 during the week of Thanksgiving. President Clinton signed the first presidential proclamation in 1997, and every president since has issued an annual proclamation appreciating family caregivers. As interest grew in family care giving issues, National Family Caregivers Week became National Family Caregivers Month.

More than 65 million family caregivers in the U.S. fulfill a vital role in ensuring continuity of care, as they are the most familiar with the patient's issues and regimens. November is a time to thank, support and celebrate these committed individuals.

4. Two caregiver-related events take place in Manchester today. First, a will begin at 9 a.m. at Always Best Care Senior Services of Central Connecticut located at 642 Hilliard Street in Manchester.

A will also take place beginning at 9 a.m. at Angelic Nursing and Home Care Registry, located at 63 East Center Street in Manchester. Click the links for all the details on these two free events.

5. Family caregivers have a difficult job on their hands, and providing assistance with basic activities such as bathing, meal preparation, dressing, getting in and out of chairs and beds, using the toilet and so much more can be very taxing. While the majority of family caregivers feel appreciated, many suffer symptoms of depression at times from the physical and mental stress. For this reason, support groups are in place throughout many communities.

A meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Mansfield Senior Center. If you would like to join this group, contact Barbara Lavoie at 860-429-0262, ext. 1.

Another resource to find a support group is the Alzheimer's Association. Here you will find support group listings and also be able to connect with others online. If you prefer, you can call their 24-hour help line at 1-800-272-3900.
