Wildcat Wrestling Wrap-Up

Awards and final thoughts from the Suffield Wildcats' 2010-2011 season.

The Suffield High School wrestling team ended their season with a pizza party held by their parents at Suffield Pizza with more than 50 people in attendance.

The party was held to thank coaches Potter, Moran and Taggert for their hard work and to the wrestlers for their dedication during the season. Potter remarked on the season and each of the wrestler’s efforts during the year. He presented each of them with a certificate highlighting their accomplishments this season.

At the winter sports awards held March 15 Potter thanked the parents for their support and his two co-captains, seniors Joe Gleason and class M medalist John Kopec, for their leadership. He noted some special moments during the season, including a comeback win at Enfield. The Wildcats were losing 30-0 when the last seven wrestlers pinned their opponents to win 36-30. He also pointed out an early loss to Stafford by 25 points that was rectified in a 30-point win on Senior Night, the last home match of the year. He also pointed out that there were seven NCCC tournament medalists this season, the highest since 2005.

The coach honored three scholar-athletes: freshman Matt Guilmette, junior Ryan Hunihan, and Kopec. Kopec was also on the academic all-team this year, one of three in the last five years.

The Most Improved award went to Ryan Hunihan, who was known as a quiet leader during his second year on the team. He garnered 14 wins and a silver medal in the NCCC tournament. The Most Dedicated award went to sophomore Dillon Lisk for his outstanding motivation during the season, never missing a practice. The Most Valuable award went to Kopec for his outstanding leadership. He had a team-leading 23 wins including a thrilling quadruple-overtime win during the Class M tournament.

"With only six returning wrestlers on the team this year, I was so proud of the accomplishments of this group,” Potter said. “The season had many highs and lows, but in the end, the wrestlers worked hard each day, never gave up and their hard work showed in the NCCC Tournament with a third place finish and seven medalists. I expect the group of 5 returning NCCC medalists, along with some talented young wrestlers, to have a great deal of success next year. I am excited to see what the season will bring and look forward to seeing our wrestlers reach their future goals."
