Wildcat Wrestling Gets Ready

The Suffield High School grapplers are looking forward to their first match against East Windsor on Dec. 14.

The Wildcat wrestlers held their first week of practice. Thanks to the Booster Club for purchasing a practice dummy and 20 conditioning ropes. These items will be used all season to aid in drills and conditioning. Again, much thanks goes out to the boosters.

Chris Potter, a Suffield resident and 16-year veteran coach, has been leading the team for 9 seasons. Roger Moran is the assistant coach with more than 25 years of experience in youth and high school wrestling. Both are truly dedicated to the sport and are leaders in teaching sportsmanship and respect.

The team will have five of its seven 2011 NCCC medal winners returning this year.

"With the talent returning from last year and a couple new additions we should be competitive in our conference," Potter said. "We have wrestlers with the ability to win the NCCC and go deep into the Class S tournament."

Given the change this year that the top six wrestlers in each class tournament move onto the state opens; one knows, without Potter saying it, that he hopes to still be coaching in late February.

Captains this year are Kevin Bentz (22-12 last year with a 3rd place NCCC finish), Dan D'Ostuni (20-16 last year with a 2nd place NCCC finish), and Ryan Hunihan (14-12 last year with a 2nd place NCCC finish). Unfortunately the team still has several weight classes unfilled but there are hopes of some last minute additions.

The team starts its season on Dec. 14 with a home match against East Windsor. Look for updates at the team’s Web site. Follow this link to see the Wildcats’ entire winter schedule.
