UConn officials adjust university move-in times as Hurricane Irene nears the Northeast.

As Hurricane Irene threatens to hit Connecticut this weekend, officials are making changes to the scheduled student move-in process to help ensure the safety of students and families.

Students received an e-mail Thursday from the university with new move-in times and advice on how to best prepare for the storm.

  • Freshmen move-in will proceed as scheduled on Friday, August 26 until 4 p.m., as will Convocation at 5 p.m., with a program for parents beginning at 4 p.m.
  • Returning students are strongly encouraged NOT to return to campus on Sunday, August 28 due to anticipated storm conditions. Instead, upperclassmen may move in Friday evening between the hours of 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. or as scheduled on Saturday, August 27.
  • Check UConn's Emergency Alert System often via alert.uconn.edu, today.uconn.edu, UConn Today’s Facebook page and public address announcements over the campus-wide siren system.
  • In the event of a power outage on campus, dining halls, the Infirmary, Public Safety Complex and UConn Police and Fire Departments will remain open and services will continue.
  • Students are also encouraged to have their cell phones charged, cash on hand and all medical prescriptions filled prior to the storm.
  • In the event of hurricane conditions, students should remain in their residence halls, lock their windows, draw the blinds and have flashlights and batteries on hand. Candles are not permitted in the dormitories.

UConn officials will continue to update students, faculty and staff as more information becomes available.
