Suffield Wildcat Girls Soccer Season Update

Get caught up with the Suffield Wildcats girls soccer team as the regular season draws to a close.

The Suffield Wildcats girls soccer team came into the 2011 season having not suffered a loss since 2008. The team finished the 2010 season with a perfect 20-0 record and a Class M State Championship.

But the team lost seven seniors via graduation at the end of the 2010-2011 academic year. If that wasn't enough pressure for the season, the team also lost junior all-state forward Alexa Keney, who suffered an ACL injury this past summer.

"There was a lot of pressure on this young team because we hadn't lost a game since 2008," said coach David Sullivan.

Suffield adapted to all this change and took it in stride, cruising to an 11-2 record. The Wildcats have scored 53 goals through 13 games and held opponents to only three scores. Each of the team's 11 wins has been a shutout.

"This year’s team does not lack talent, [it] only lacks experience," said Sullivan.

The Wildcats shut out East Windsor at home to start the season with a win. But a loss at home to Avon in the season's second game was the first defeat for six members of the team. The Wildcats bounced back with five straight wins until their second defeat, which came at home against the Granby Bears on Oct. 5.

"The loss to Granby was harder to get over because we had gotten better," Sullivan said. "But a couple of inexperience[d] mistakes cost us two goals and we lost, 2-1."

The Wildcats face a tough schedule at the end of the regular season, traveling to Avon on Tuesday and Granby on Friday. The Wildcats will aim to avenge their earlier home losses to the Falcons and the Bears.

"How we respond to these two challenges will determine how successful we will be in the State Championship," Sullivan said.

While the conference crown has yet to be decided, the Wildcats have positioned themselves for a run at the state title.

"Even though we have a lot of new faces on this year’s team, I am very proud of how this team has carried on the winning tradition at Suffield High School," Sullivan said.

The Suffield girls soccer team ends the regular season at home against Enfield on Nov. 2. Coach Sullivan's Wildcats start their quest for Sullivan’s seventh Class M title on Nov. 7.
