Suffield Captures Road Win by Beating Enfield, 9-4

Two Wildcat pitchers combine to allow just three hits in NCCC baseball victory.

Troy Hastings did a little bit of everything Wednesday for the Suffield High School baseball team.

The junior had a perfect day at the plate, scored three runs, pitched two innings of scoreless relief and snared a sizzling line drive to start a seventh-inning double play, all despite fouling a ball squarely off his foot in the first inning, then being hit in the leg with a pitch in the same at-bat.

Hastings' heroics led Suffield to a 9-4 victory over NCCC rival Enfield, snapping a two-game losing streak for the Wildcats.

"Troy gave us a great game," Suffield coach Steve Wheeler said. "He definitely was our hero of the game."

Suffield starting pitcher Sean Pare earned the victory, overcoming some early wildness to record 10 strikeouts in five innings.

The Wildcats jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a walk to Nick Mangiameli, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and a run-scoring groundout by John Zawawi.

Enfield jumped to a 3-2 lead in its half of the first on walks to Avery Boissy and Tom Meskell, four wild pitches, an RBI single by Tyler Griffith and three passed balls.

Bobby Clark was hit by a pitch opening the Suffield second, and he eventually scored the tying run on an infield single by Tom Owens.

The Raiders reclaimed the lead in the second on a walk to Chris Tweeddale, a single by Boissy and a wild pitch.

Suffield took the lead for good in the third, driving Enfield starter Matt Boulette from the game. Hastings singled, stole second and scored on a single by Robbie Hitt, who eventually scored on an infield error.

The Wildcats added three more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by hastings and a two-run double by Zawawi, then tallied the game's final run in the fifth on an Enfield error.

Pare and Hastings combined to allow just three hits, two by Boissy.

For the Wildcats, Zawawi knocked in four runs and Owens drove home two. Hitt and Clark each scored twice.

Suffield (2-2) looks to move over .500 Thursday, traveling to Canton at 3:45 p.m. Enfield (3-2) faces East Granby Monday on the two teams' annual trip to Florida.
