Suffield Academy Seniors Named McDonald's All American BBall Nominees

Two Suffield Academy seniors were announced as McDonald's All American basketball team nominees on Jan. 18, the pair are two of the five total nominees from Connecticut (excluding Fairfield County).

Two seniors were named McDonald's All American basketball nominees on Jan. 18, a recognition bestowed on 600 high school seniors throughout the country.

Ben Freeland and Erik Sanders are two of the five total nominees, four boys and one girl, from all of Connecticut excluding Fairfield County (that area has its own set of nominees). The field of 600 nominees with be reduced to 24 All Americans, 12 boys and 12 girls, on Feb. 9. The boys and girls games will be held in Chicago at the United Center on March 28.

McDonald's All American basketball teams are often viewed as one of the most elite of all high school All American rankings. Numerous college and professional standouts have held the honor since it was introduced in 1977.

The 2012 games' proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses in the Chicago and northwest Indiana areas.

Area nominees are announced by regional McDonald's owner/operator associations. Rachel Deane, an area McDonald’s owner/operator and president of the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association, commented on the nominees.

"Connecticut continues to produce elite basketball talent and the nomination of five local players signifies the hard work and dedication of our young athletes," said Rachel Deane, area McDonald’s owner/operator and president of the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association. "They contribute to their schools, the community and the game."
