Courtney Flynn a Success in the Pool and the Classroom

Somers resident and day student Courtney Flynn has been swimming since she was very young and while she also participated in other sports, swimming was her true calling.

Flynn is a four year varsity swimmer, and has been captain the last two years. She also holds three Suffield Academy school records -the 100 yard breaststroke, which she initially broke it 2010 and then broke again 2011, the 200 yard individual medley, which she broke in 2011, and was part of the 200 medley relay team that broke the record in 2011.

Flynn took second place in the New England Prep School Swim Championship (NEPSSC) in the 100 breaststroke record breaking swim. In the 200 IM record breaking swim, she took third place in the NEPSSC. In the 200 medley relay record breaking swim, the team took first place in the NEPSSC with new pool record.

During her freshman and sophomore year, Flynn ran cross country and played tennis before stopping to focus on swimming.

When she is not swimming for the school team, Flynn swims for her club team. She currently swims with the Laurel East Hartford Y (LEHY) team and has since last year. Before that, she swam for the Aquabears in Suffield for a couple years.

Flynn is a two-time 200 yard girls 15-18 breaststroke champion - in 2010 and 2011. She is also a two-time participant in the Y Nationals swim championships in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

In addition to that, Flynn was a finalist at the USA Swimming Grand Prix Minnesota Meet in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke.

When she's not in the pool, Flynn is also excelling in the classroom. 

She is a four-year leadership scholar and a USA Swimming Scholar Athlete, which is a national level recognition that requires a cut time in a swimming event and grades above 3.5. Flynn's 200 breaststroke and grades qualified her for this accolade.

Flynn is also a CT Swimming Scholar Athlete and a USA Academic All American, which requires a four-year 3.5 minimum and four year's varsity experience.

In her free time, Flynn is a lifeguard and swim instructor at the South Windsor Swim & Tennis Club, is a school tour guide coordinator and leader, and makes pottery.

She will attend Amherst College, in Amherst, MA in the fall and will swim for the Lord Jeffs. She plans to study science and is interested in sports medicine.

1. When did you start swimming? What got you started?

I started swimming on a swim team when I was five years old.  At the time, I lived in South Carolina and it was the thing that all the neighborhood kids did. I loved it from the first day.

2. What is your favorite swimming moment?

My favorite moment was swimming the 200 yard Breaststroke finals event at the 2010 USA Swimming Grand Prix meet in Minnesota last November. In addition to getting my best time in that event, it was a good experience to swim against and watch Olympians compete in the same meet.

3. What do you do to get ready for a meet?

To get ready for a meet, I get plenty of sleep the night before, drink lots of water and listen to my iPod.

4. Do you play any other sports? If not, do you swim on any premier teams or anything?

In addition to my high school team, I swim year round for LEHY which is both a USA Swim Team and Y swim team.  

5. What are some of your hobbies when you're not swimming?

When I'm not swimming, I like to run.
