Suffield PTAC Hosts Back to School Events
The Suffield Parent Teacher Advisory Council is jumping right into the new school year with book sales and activity nights.
Parents roamed the halls of Suffield Middle School Thursday night, much like their children may have done in the weeks prior. They squeezed into small desks, took notes and raised their hands with questions.
It was open house night for parents of middle schoolers who got to meet the teachers, the school organizations and tour the building. And after it was all done, it wasn't too late to stop by the Suffield Parent Teacher Advisory Council's Scholastic Book Fair, which also continues during the day today for students.
"We typically make about $500 per book fair," said Kris Karam, this year's PTAC president. "The kids buy about $2,000 worth of stuff that costs us $1,500."

"Kids come down during their language arts class or a study hall. Besides the books they love the pointers, pencils, book marks, and cool erasers," she added.
The money helps fund events like enrichment assemblies and subsidizes field trips like the 8th grade white water rafting trip. The fundraiser, which take about 11 volunteer to run it, also earns scholastic dollars.

"This year we have $103 scholastic dollars to spend by October so we gave a catalog of books to the administration to make any purchase they wish," Karam said.
The PTO is also sponsoring a back to school fun night at Suffield Middle School tonight.
For just $7 students grades 6,7 and 8 will be treated to a night of dancing, games and activites from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Drop off and pickup will be at the cafeteria entrance opposite the tennis courts. Parents must come to the cafeteria doors to pick up their child at the end of the event. Students must arrive with a signed permission slip that can be found on the Suffield Middle School website: http://ms.suffield.org/www/suffieldct_sms/site/hosting/BACKPACK2012/danc...
The Main Objectives of the PTAC are "to support and speak on behalf of our children at SMS, to support educational and enrichment pursuits that are not included in the school’s budget, to encourage parental involvement at SMS and to work closely with teachers and administrators at SMS to maximize our children’s education."
Also on the board with Kris Karam are Rachel Little, Kathy Bond and Lateisha Griggs. The PTAC holds many student events thorughout the year and is always on the lookout for committe chairs and volunteers. For more inforamtion pleae check out http://ms.suffield.org/groups/ptac
