The Suffield High School athletics department held a ceremony Friday night to honor athletes who showed promise during the spring season.

The ceremony, which consisted of each team's coach talking about the progression of their seasons and the achievements of their respective teams, consisted of 37 separate awards.

Awards varied by team and were given in categories including most valuable player and most improved player as well as general recognition from a team's coach.

Besides giving awards for achievement on the field, student athletes were honored for their scholastic work off the field, with dozens of scholar athlete awards presented.

One team found a nice balance between sports and studies. The girl's golf team, consisting of a relatively small roster, all recieved scholar-athlete recognition.

Some coaches easily knew which players deserved awards, while others had harder times deciding. Boy's track coach Dom Casolari and girl's track coach Leeayn Burke gave MVP awards for specific types of events, including runs of various distances.

The girl's track team, boasting one of the largest rosters this spring, won the NCCC title. It has several athletes going to compete at the state and regional level.

Burke thanked the audience and other coaches for changing the schedule slightly because they had to leave after the ceremony to compete in New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championship on Saturday in Burlington, VT, where the 4 x 800 meter team came in third overall.

The boy's lacrosse team, knocked out of the NCCC tournament by Somers, had awards and acknowledgments from outside the school as well. Several players earned All-Conference recognition and one player garnered All-State recognition.

All the teams had a chance to thank friends and family who helped make the season possible. Many seniors gave thanks to their coaches.

The boy's golf team had an especially memorable present for Coach Casolari – a turtle.
