Suffield High Girls and Boys Cross Country Sweep Three-Team Meet in Granby

The girls remain undefeated for the season.

Suffield High School's girls and boys cross country teams raced against Enfield and Granby Wednesday in a meet held at Granby Memorial High School.

Granby's course loops around the upper and lower athletic fields, which were crowded with Suffield athletic fans, as in addition to the cross country races, the Wildcats' girls varsity and JV soccer teams were having matches against Granby at the same time.

The Wildcat girls continue their undefeated season, outrunning Granby 25-36 and shutting out Enfield 15-50. Suffield was again led by senior Elizabeth Rigby, who finished third overall in the race. The Wildcats then captured the next six places, sealing the victory. Laura Sweeney was 4th, Nina Begley 5th, Monique LaBarre 6th, Hanna Gardocki 7th, Katelyn Corr 8th,  Kellan McGann 9th, Erin Reynolds 11th, Erin Kost 12th, Lauren Lizabel 13th, Megan Morton 15th, Megan Shannon 16th and Shayla Mattesson 17th.

Suffield's boys were led by race winner Jimmy Clark, who won with a time of 16:50 over the 5k (3.1 mile) course. Clark was followed by teammates Patrick Begley 2nd, Justin Walch 3rd, Kevin Powell 4th, Ben Gee 6th, Shawn Andrade 7th, Matt Guilmette 9th, John Urbanski 10th and Max Morris 13th. The Wildcats defeated Granby 16–46 and Enfield 15–50.

Suffield boys and girls will be racing in the Wickham Park Cross Country Invitational this Saturday in East Hartford.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I was simply suggesting that roads are resurfaced. There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
