Suffield Cafeteria Health Inspections Produce Good Marks

The Connecticut Health Investigative Team has released reports from inspections of school cafeterias in Suffield.

Suffield schools received relatively strong marks on state food service inspection reports compiled by the Connecticut Health Investigative Team (C-HIT). Of the twelve reports, only three had scores with less than 90 of a maximum 100 points.

The reports reflect visits made by state inspectors in April and September 2010 to the six scholastic food service areas in town: the cafeterias at Spaulding Elementary School, McAlister Intermediate School, Suffield Middle School, Suffield High School, Suffield Academy, and the academy’s snack bar.

Suffield High School had scores of 89 and 90, while Suffield Academy received an 84 and an 87. The highest scores went to Spaulding with a 97 and McAlister with a 98, both tallied in September.

Notable violations at the high school included raw meat stored next to frozen cookies in a freezer, the lack of a qualified food operator on inspection day and out-of-date employee training forms. Inspectors visiting the academy noted dirty shelving, a clogged floor drain, the mixing of dirty and clean utensils, unprotected food and mold in a cooler used to store food.

C-HIT collected more than 1,700 inspection reports from 103 cities and towns. To find the Suffield reports, visit this section of the New Haven Independent, where C-HIT maintains its Internet presence.
