Suffield BoE Invites Residents to Office Hours with Superintendent Baldwin

The Suffield Board of Education wants Suffield community members to attend one of the office hours sessions with Superintendent Karen Baldwin.

The Suffield Board of Education (BOE) is currently crafting a proposed budget for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year.

Superintendent Karen Baldwin presented her budget to the board in early February and the budget was subsequently reviewed and refined within the BOE budget subcommittee process.

Currently the entire board is now considering the $31,263,943 budget, representing a modest 1.63 percent increase, for a vote that will send the proposal on for consideration approval from the Board of Finance as part of the town’s yearly budget process. More than a financial document, a school budget works as the values statement for a school district and the community it serves. In a very difficult economic time, the budget currently before the BOE has been crafted with the primary focus of the needs of the 2,500 students who go to school every day in Suffield.

The Superintendent, administration and BOE have taken the initiative to actively pursue efficiencies in delivery of service. Our goal is to offer a budget that allows educational work focused on student progress and creates structures of professional collaboration that include all members of the learning community working towards continuous improvement.

The BOE and Superintendent Baldwin have been also working together to improve communication and transparency about the budget and the work of the district. To that end we are inviting all members of the Suffield community, as stakeholders in our schools, to attend office hours with the superintendent. These are opportunities to visit and ask questions of the Superintendent.

The strategy came out of the BOE subcommittee on community engagement and public relations. We anticipate the office hours strategy being implemented as a vehicle for community outreach throughout the year on issues beyond the budget.

We hope to see you there!
