Suffield's McAlister Intermediate School Is The Place To Be

The school community celebrated Fall with an Open House and the PTO Book Fair.

McAlister Intermediate School was a flurry of activity Tuesday and Wednesday night during the Fall Open House and Scholastic Book Fair.

Families came armed with trash bags of donations for the Fall Clothing Drive.

Old students came back to say hello to favorite teachers. New students dragged parents about the classrooms to show off their desks and colorful projects on walls.

In the gymnasium, books shelves decorated the room and children wandered about gathering books and fun pencils and posters of famous boy bands. Gracious parent volunteers checked out families before they walked out of the school into the crisp night air.

Additional upcoming events at McAlister include:

The McCusker Haunted Barn - Parents, kids, ghouls and goblins can get scared out of their wits Friday, October 19 -20 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the haunted barn at 462 Ratley Road in West Suffield. The scary, spooky fun includes hayrides, cider, Halloween treats, and of course, the terrifying Haunted Barn ! All proceeds will benefit Suffield Middle School’s PTAC and its students!

The Harvest Hustle - Participants will walk/run around at their own pace with their teachers and classmates during the schoolday while earning donations, exercising and most of all having fun! All students & staff will participate. The event is held at both Spaulding and McAlister schools on Wednesday, October 31.

The Funky Foot Breakfast on the Go - Due to the large number of particpants this year, the celebration breakfast will be November 8 during the last Funky Foot gathering. “Breakfast on the Go” will feature fun snacks to munch on as walkers go around the track. The rain date will be November 15th, 2012.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I was simply suggesting that roads are resurfaced. There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
