McAlister, Spaulding Schools Closed due to Snow Concerns

Questions about the amount of snow on the buildings' roofs will keep their doors shut on Wednesday, Feb. 9 and possibly Thursday, Feb. 10.

and Schools are closed today, according to an announcement from Mary Greenlaw-Dixon, superintendent of Suffield Public Schools. Concerns about snow and ice on the roofs of the buildings forced the closures.

"At the recommendation of our town building official, Ted Flanders, we will be taking these precautionary measures in order to remove the snow and ice from the roofs," her announcement said.

, due to concerns about the structural integrity of the roof over that part of the building.

Suffield Middle School and Suffield High School will stay open as the weight of snow and ice on those buildings' roofs has not been deemed a concern.

"We appreciate your understanding and flexibility during these unusual circumstances," Greenlaw-Dixon's announcement said. "Our focus continues to be on the safety of our students and staff and we will continue to monitor and assess the situations at all of our schools."

The school system will communicate closure information for Thursday through the individual schools' Web sites (Spaulding) (McAlister) and the K12 Alerts announcement system if necessary.
