Empty Bowl Event a Success

Suffield High School students work to end hunger here in the Suffield community and throughout the world.

was a busy place the evening of Feb 4. With two and a gathering of Boy Scouts, the scene was bustling. Add to that a group of students working to end hunger and you have a snapshot of the diversity of the Suffield community.

Kerri Michaud, art teacher at Suffield High School, along with members of the Art Club helped to stage an Empty Bowl event at the high school. The Empty Bowl Project is an international movement to help end hunger. Sponsored by the and the Rotary Club of Suffield, this is the first time the schools have staged such an event.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., individuals, students and families shared a simple meal of soup and bread with cupcakes for dessert. Students enrolled in the high school's cooking classes participated by making all of the soups that were served. The choices included Minestrone, Italian wedding and chicken noodle.

All of the schools in Suffield participated. Students in art classes and in after school programs crafted about 150 bowls to sell at the event.

The proceeds from the event were split between the Emergency Aid Association and Action Against Hunger.

“Right now I have $1,025," said Michaud. "I’m happy to get art out into the community while raising money for an important cause. We had a great success for our first year. I'm guessing that about 100 bowls were sold. The left over ones we are trying to sell in the front office for five dollars.”
