Bridge Street School Proposal

Its time too eliminate the Bridge School issue from Suffield's list and move forward with the Lexingtron proposal.

A pubic hearing was held last night on the Lexington Apartment proposal.  Many citizens spoke against the proposal.  Personally, the proposal looks and sounds great in addition to solving very long outstanding issues.  The postives are obvious. The negatives mentioned was the sale price.  The "appearance looks like a Marriott". The prime property should be used for something else.  Increased traffic and its impact on residents living across the street.  Just to mention a few.  The first selectman and others addressed these comments / concerns properly.  In my humble opinion, the price was the best offered with the best proposal.  What more can anyone expect.  Second, the appearance.  The proposal looks fantastic.  With new colonial charm which many other towns have added.  What the problem, it blend better than the library.  Other usage.  Well, as was explained, the town has looked into other options unsuccessfully and the town does not need the parcel for other usages, (fire, office space, etc).  Why re-visit past issues ... let move forward.  As far as the traffic!  Traffic is an on going issue on this portion of Bridge street for years.  Traffic would be an issue regardless of the project.  However this is a good time to address the issue.  Maybe, the zoning board will only allow entrance and exit from Route 75.  Maybe, the town can afford to put audible signals on the bridge street crossing.  Our town center at Bridge and 75 is not traffic friendly.  Never has been.  Never will be unless a bypass is built.  Let open the discuss.  Don't forget to vote the town meeting, TBD.  Oh! The school system impact expected is minor.  Regardless should we stop progress, building anything in which kids can live.  Okay, hopefully this will open the discussion to the entire town and not just the minority that attend the public hearing.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I was simply suggesting that roads are resurfaced. There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
