Suffield Candidates for 2011 Elections Announced

Suffield’s Democratic and Republican candidates for local offices have been announced.

The position of first selectman, the top position in the town’s government, will be contested by incumbent Democrat Tom Frenaye and Republican candidate Ed McAnaney, former Suffield judge of probate and town attorney.

Suffield’s Board of Selectmen will return its four incumbents; Republicans Tim Reynolds and Joanne Sullivan and Democrats Brian Fitzgerald and Eileen Moncrief will run unopposed for the four available seats on the board.

The Suffield Board of Education has three new Democratic candidates, D. George Beiter, Dr. Andrew Fish and Michelle Zawawi, running for available seats along with incumbent Lori D’Ostuni. Republican incumbent Mary Lou Sanborn was nominated by the Republican Town Committee, as was new candidate Scott Schneider. The six candidates are running for five available seats.

There is one Republican candidate for the Board of Finance, former First Selectman Scott Lingenfelter. Three Democrats, incumbent Joe Sangiovanni and newcomers Kate Rietberg and Sam Coatti, will run as well.

The Suffield Police Commission had three Democratic candidates nominated, incumbents Peter Hill and Linda Stevenson and newcomer Joseph Quinn. A fourth Democratic hopeful, Billy Kures, did not receive a nomination but may force a primary or run as a petition candidate. Republican incumbent Matt Joyal will seek a seat along with newcomer Ken Pascoe.

Elaine O’Brien, incumbent town clerk and State Rep., will run unopposed for the town clerk position as a Democrat. Similarly, incumbent tax collector Jill Schectman, a Republican, and incumbent treasurer Christine Davidson, a Democrat, will run unopposed.

The Fire Commission will have incumbent Democrats Gerry Bland, Richard Leach and Bob Quagliaroli running for positions on the commission. A position will be contested by Republican Paul Christian as well.

The Board of Assessment Appeals will see Steve McKeen, a Democrat, and James Wood, a Republican, running for the open seat.

The two Democrats running for the Zoning and Planning Commission are Charles Sheehan as a full member and Mark O’Hara as an alternate. Republicans Frank Bauchiero and Chet Kuras are seeking election as full members, as is Gina Pastula as an alternate.

Suffield’s Water Pollution Control Authority will have Republicans Bruce Remington, Ian Urch, Wally Rodger and Mike Kelley running for open seats. The Democratic candidate is Brendan Begley.
