Storm Effects Update: Power Back Tonight, Home Damaged

Power will return for the vast majority of Suffield on Friday night.

Power is still out for more than 850 Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) customers in Suffield as of 4:15 p.m Friday but almost all power will be restored by Friday night, according to Suffield Police.

The outages peaked Thursday evening as more than 4,600 of the town's total customers, 78 percent, were in the dark. More than 1,000 customers were without power on Friday morning.

Suffield Police Captain Craig Huntley said the storm didn't cause any serious injuries in town, but brought down trees and power lines. Huntley said Suffield's Emergency Management Director John Woods was tracking the storm as it approached town, keeping emergency services appraised and ready for when it hit.

Suffield's ambulance, fire and police services worked in concert during the storm.

"the three worked well together, hand in hand," Huntley said.

Trees fell on two on at least two Suffield houses, the King House Museum and a home on Birch Road, during the storm.

Mike Grillo said a tree fell onto the roof of his home at 188 Birch Road around 5 p.m. Thursday, seriously damaging the roof and interior of his home.

"The inside got destroyed but nobody got hurt," he said.

The tree was removed Friday afternoon but the damage was obvious as Grillo sat with family and friends outside the home. Grillo said it was too early to know exactly what needs to be fixed. He is currently staying with family.

Rachel Chapman of RJ's Ice Cream and Bake Shop in West Suffield said the store was especially busy this morning as locals without power headed there for breakfast.

"I had a lot of people coming in," she said.
