Two teenagers hiking in the woods near the intersection of Quarry and Phelps roads made a gruesome discovery Friday — a dead body stuffed into a duffel bag.

At about 1:45 p.m., WWLP-22 TV in Springfield reports, the teens came upon the duffel bag and smelled a foul odor coming from it. They called police and opened the bag, discovering the leg of the body.

Police told WWLP the body appeared to be that of a white man, and surrounding communities in Connecticut and Massachusetts have been alerted in case there are any missing persons reports that might match the victim.

Capt. Craig Huntley said the body was taken to the state medical examiner's office, but does not expect a report to be issued before Monday at the earliest.

Police are asking anyone with any information to call them at 860-668-3870.
