Man Whose Son Shot Beagles Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail

The killings allegedly occurred on a hunting trip in Suffield.

An Enfield man whose son shot three beagles on a hunting trip in Suffield in 2012 will spend 30 days in jail, according to published reports.

John Lake, 54, of Enfield was sentenced to a one-year prison term, suspended after 30 days, and three years probation, according to the Journal Inquirer. In a plea bargain, Lake pleaded guilty to accessory to cruelty to animals.

Lake was not with his 13-year-old son when the boy killed the dogs, but he reportedly told him it was okay to shoot them and then removed their collars and dumped them in a ravine. A man who regularly saw the dogs and their owner, Richard Johnson, 83, found the dogs' bodies on a property off East Street South in Suffield.

Johnson was reportedly hunting rabbits with his pack of five dogs when the three did not return.
