Follow These Tips to Beat the Heat

Stay hydrated, stay indoors and don't over exert yourself during the heat wave.

With another week of blistering temperatures expected – temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s throughout most of the week, with the heat index possibly into the hundreds – following these tips from the Manchester Fire Department and Manchester Emergency Management can help you stay cool and safe:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol or too much sugar because they can cause you to lose excessive fluids from the body. Eat small meals and eat more often.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.  Wear a hat.  Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Participate in activities that will keep you cool, such as going to the movies, shopping at the mall, visiting the Library or swimming at a town pool.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
  • Recognize the symptoms of heat disorders. If you or someone nearby seems confused, lightheaded or weak, get them out of the heat and seek medical assistance.
