Pancake Breakfast, Contest Deadline and Goof-offs: Suffield's Daily 5

Five things Suffield residents should know for Friday, March 22.

Good morning, Suffield! Today is Friday, March 22, 2013; there are 284 days left in the year.

Here's your Daily 5:

1. A pancake breakfast sponsored by the Suffield High School LEO Club will be held Sunday, March 24 from 8-11 a.m. in Father Ted Hall at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Rd. Proceeds will go toward buying supplies for a pair of autism schools where LEO Club members do community service: Riverstreet in Windsor and Coltsville in Hartford. The buffet-style menu includes pancakes, sausage, bacon and fruit cups. A 50/50 raffle will take place, as well as a silent auction featuring Boston Red Sox tickets, Springfield Falcons tickets, a pottery bowl and much more. Cost is $5 per person, or $20 for a family of four or more.

2. Today is the deadline for the Suffield Chamber of Commerce logo design contest. Submissions with a scanned-in attached concept sketch or a completed logo design file may be emailed to info@suffieldchamber.com.

3. March 22 is National Goof-off DayNational Bavarian Crepes Day and National Water Day.

4. The National Weather Service forecast for Suffield calls for mostly sunny skies Friday, with a high temperature of 40. Friday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 26.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
