NWS: Severe Storms Expected This Afternoon

Due to forecasts of scattered showers and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Hartford and Tolland Counties.

With thunder and lightning storms expected to roll in this afternoon and tonight, many people will be forced to postpone their outdoor activities and summer barbeques.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Northern Connecticut for Monday afternoon into this evening.

The NWS is calling for severe, scattered thunderstorms with the possibility of strong damaging winds and large hail. According to reports, torrential rainfall is likely and could lead to flooding in areas with poor drainage.

In the event storms do touch down locally, Patch has compiled information provided by the American Red Cross and developed a quick safety tip sheet for what to do - and not do - during a thunderstorm.

Here are some guidelines for what you should do if a thunderstorm is likely in your area:

  • Listen to the NWS for the latest weather reports and emergency updates;
  • watch for the basic signs of a storm; darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind;
  • if a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued, take shelter;
  • avoid electrical equipment and telephones - use battery-powered TVs and radios instead; and
  • close windows and outside doors.

Avoid the following:

  • Showering;
  • plumbing;
  • metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity; and
  • the outdoors.
