New York Trip, Employee Milestones and Fragrance Day: Suffield's Daily 5

Five things Suffield residents should know for Thursday, March 21.

Good morning, Suffield! Today is Thursday, March 21, 2013; there are 285 days left in the year.

Here's your Daily 5:

1. The Suffield Parks and Recreation Department still has space available for New York City on Your Own on April 17, but the registration deadline of Wednesday, March 27 is approaching fast. April is a beautiful time of year to visit New York City. Visit The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at Fort Tryon Park, or The Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue. While you are there do some shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, then head on down to Little Italy to experience the Italian cuisine and why not visit the street vendors on Canal Street. Cost is $37 per person for round trip bus transportation, departing Suffield Middle School at 7:30 a.m. and leaving New York at 7 p.m.

2. Goodwin College in East Hartford recently announced Longevity Milestones for 32 employees with at least five years of service. Three of the honorees are from Suffield: Tamara Webb (10 years), Jerry Jarvis (five years) and Lori Jarvis (five years).

3. March 21 is Fragrance DayNational French Bread Day and Brain Injury Awareness Day.

4. The National Weather Service forecast for Suffield calls for mostly cloudy skies Thursday, with a high temperature of 37. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 25.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
