Five things Suffield residents should know for Friday, March 15.

Good morning, Suffield! Today is Friday, March 15, 2013; there are 291 days left in the year.

Here's your Daily 5:

1. The Suffield Chamber of Commerce logo design contest, open to both Chamber and community members, is running until March 22. Submissions with a scanned-in attached concept sketch or a completed logo design file may be emailed to info@suffieldchamber.com.

2. Just two days remain for you to upload a picture of your lucky charm for our latest photo contest. A random drawing will determine the winner of a bunch of cool Patch gear. Deadline is March 17. Coming soon: the Patch PEEPS photo contest; check out the details here.

3. March 15 is the Ides of March, notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. (also the name of a Chicago-area band that had a big hit with "Vehicle" in 1970, as well as a 2011 film starring Ryan Gosling and directed by George Clooney).

4. March 15 is also National Pears Helene DayAbsolutely Incredible Kids Day and Buzzard's Day.

5. The National Weather Service forecast for Suffield calls for increasing clouds with a chance of an afternoon sprinkle Friday, and a high temperature of 42. Friday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 27.

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
