Officials say long-term power outages are possible.

Break out the batteries, bottle your water and batten down the hatches.

Connecticut Light & Power is warning Nutmeggers that Hurricane Irene could cause power outages lasting a week or more in some areas of the state.

Jeff Butler, president and chief operating officer of CL&P, urged customers in a news release Thursday to be prepared for the potential loss of electricity caused by the pending storm.

“We plan for the worst and hope for the best," said Butler in a statement released by the company. “Our customers need to be ready too.”

Butler went on to say that CL&P has “a comprehensive plan to respond to Hurricane Irene,” and that Northeast Utilities and CL&P’s sister companies in Massachusetts and New Hampshire are on standby.

Hurricane Irene is projected to hit Stamford around 5 p.m. on Sunday as a category 1 storm.

While the forecast is expected to change, the potential for flooding remains a possibility due to the anticipated accumulation of 6 to 10 inches of rain across the state.

An excess of 12 inches could be possible in some areas if the storm spends an extended amount of time over the state.

Power outages can be reported to CL&P at 800-286-2000 or 860-947-2000 in the Hartford/Meriden area.
