Sunday Afternoon Storm Update: Schools Closed Monday, Shelter Open, Emergency Contact Info

Suffield homes and businesses are still in the dark Sunday afternoon as power is still out for 96 percent of residents, according to CL&P. The shelter at is open. All Suffield public schools will be closed Monday.

Suffield Emergency Management Director John Woods said information for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy indicated Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) will not be able to completely restore power to Suffield for about a week.

Woods said roads in Suffield are barely passable but slowly opening up. He advised motorists to stay off town roads unless they are in an emergency situation.

Remember to treat intersections with non-functional stoplights as if a stop sign was posted on each road.

The shelter at Suffield High School, 1060 Sheldon Street, is open with about 100 people present. Emergency crews have been picking up town residents since about 5 a.m. to bring them to the shelter. Town residents are encouraged to go to the shelter if they feel it is necessary.

Food, cots and pillows are available at the shelter. Pets are welcome as long as owners bring a crate and a valid rabies certificate. If planning to spend the night, bring toiletries and bedding. Wall plugs are available to charge cell phones and computers.
