John Tinnirella, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The First National Bank of Suffield, was named Hartford Business Journal’s 2013 CFO of the Year in the category of private companies with fewer than 100 employees. Tinnirella and the winners of the other categories were honored at a luncheon at the Connecticut Convention Center on November 12, 2013. The publication profiled the winners in its November 14 issue.
Tinnirella has been with the Bank for 22 years, the last 18 as CFO. He previously worked at The Connecticut Bank and Trust for 28 years. Tinnirella is a graduate of the Williams School of Banking and the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Colorado.
At the Bank, Tinnirella is responsible for the budget, cost controls, investments and Human Resources and is the Bank’s security officer. Under his leadership, the Bank achieved record earnings in 2012.

Tinnirella emphasizes that the root of the Bank’s steady success is its commitment to longstanding values, especially in the challenging environment of recent years. Community banks, particularly, are subject to pressures from increased regulations and must wisely invest in ever-changing technology. “The most important decisions we made this year focused on remaining true to the Bank’s core principles with regard to risks and rewards,” Tinnirella told the Journal. “With today’s low interest rates, it could be tempting to go after higher yield and incur more risk than we normally would.”
