The Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Suffield (the “Bank”) and its holding company, First Suffield Financial, Inc. (Trading Symbol: FSFF.PK, the “Company”), today announced the promotion of Nancy Viggiano to serve as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank and its parent bank holding company, First Suffield Financial, Inc.

Viggiano will also serve as a Director of both entities and fill the vacancies created by the resignation of George W. Hermann, who announced his plans to leave the Bank effective February 1, 2012. Viggiano’s titles are expected to include the word “interim” until the annual meeting.

Viggiano has been with the First National Bank of Suffield since 1995 and has served in a variety of capacities within the Bank’s retail, lending, branch administration and executive management functions.  Prior to this promotion, she served as the senior vice president for residential lending and retail banking.

Dr. Douglas Viets, Chairman of the Boards of both the Company and the Bank, stated, “The First National Bank of Suffield is fortunate to have a talented and capable team, which will be led by Nancy Viggiano. Ms. Viggiano is respected by everyone in the Bank and community. She possesses the banking and leadership skills to enable the Bank to continue to be a source of financial strength and stability in the communities that we serve.

“Throughout its 150-year history, the Bank has benefitted from outstanding leadership,” continued Dr. Viets. “George Hermann served as President of the Bank for the past five years and was an excellent link in that chain of leadership. We wish him continued success in his future endeavors. While Mr. Hermann’s decision to leave the Bank was unexpected, the Board is confident that Nancy Viggiano will build on the Bank’s strong tradition of leadership. Ms. Viggiano has been instrumental in the Bank’s success, growth and profitability during the past 17 years.”

Ms. Viggiano said, “I appreciate the confidence that has been placed in me and in our management team. I look forward to building on the Bank’s traditions of service to customers and the community, while prudently building value for our shareholders.”

Mr. Hermann stated, “It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as President and CEO of both The First National Bank of Suffield and First Suffield Financial, Inc. for the past five years.  I have never worked with a more dedicated and hardworking staff. The Board of Directors has provided the direction and support that I have needed to do my job during some challenging economic times.”

The problem is resurfacing all the roads in Suffield would cost a great deal of money. Suffield is aRead More big town. I do understand that some roads in Suffield do not have enough adjacent suitable land to create a separate bike lane, but I believe bike lanes could be constructed along sections of some scenic roads. Half a loaf is better than none at all. Salvatore, if you have not already been there, you may want to consider cycling on the island of Nantucket. I have not been there in years, but outside of its main town, Nantucket did offer good riding conditions and peaceful surroundings--at least when I visited.

Thank you for your comment. Actually, I was simply suggesting that roads are resurfaced. There isn'tRead More probably enough room for bike lanes on most of these backroads, but if at least the pavement was brought to an acceptable condition, that would make biking much more pleasant (I should say "possible") and, let's not forget, much safer. Some particularly damaged areas represent a serious danger to bikers' safety.

There may be a solution--a compromise of sorts. Put a narrow, but well-maintained bike lane on largeRead More sections of each scenic road in town, the roads with fewer cars and trucks. Just having the bike lanes may be draw for out-of-town cyclists to visit Suffield and spend money at local businesses. Instead of attempting to change Suffield into a metropolitan area, with all the problems that brings, celebrate (and financially support) its original identity--a scenic, peaceful agricultural town with some nice amenities.
