Suffield On The Green Begins Saturday, Features 9/11 Remembrance Parade

The annual, weekend-long Suffield On The Green festival will feature a Saturday night 9/11 memorial parade.

Suffield On The Green, the annual festival in the center of Suffield, is ready to go this weekend and features a 9/11 memorial parade on Saturday night.

Crafts, entertainment, food, the Friends of Kent Memorial Library book sale, the largest raffle in the festival's history, a dog showcase, a farm showcase and cookie bake-off, Sunday barbecue and more are available for attendees to enjoy. The weekend's events, hosted by the non-profit group Friends of Suffield, are centered around Suffield's north and south greens, near the intersection of Mountain Road and Route 75.

The 9/11 memorial parade begins gathering at Ffyler Place at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, shortly after the conclusion of the day's other events.

Suffield Police Captain Criag Huntley is the master of ceremonies for the parade, set to start moving up Mountain Road at 6 p.m. Saturday towards the town's war memorial. The Reverend Scott Seabury and Major David Larson, a military chaplain, will perform the invocation and music will be provided by Dan Kehoe and Keith Moreau. A candlelight vigil will also be held.

The parade and ceremony are dedicated to "remember[ing] the tragic loss our country endured," according to a press release from the town.

Guests invited to the parade include the Connecticut Department of Correction's Honor Guard, the Air National Guard Honor Guard from Bradley International Airport, The Suffield Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts, police elements from Enfield, Granby, Hartford and Longmeadow, Mass., Suffield police, firefighters and ambulance staff, LifeStar, the Southwick, Mass. Fire Department and the Suffield High School Marching Band, among others.

The farm showcase is the major event during the day on Saturday. The cookie bake-off, open to all interested participants, begins at noon. In addition, tractors, farming equipment, farm animals, floral and produce displays and a kidsʼ craft area are available to see and enjoy throughout the day.

Saturday's other events are plentiful and varied. Attendees can hear live music, see a gymnastics demonstration and the Friends of Suffield grants presentation.

Saturday morning's 5K and 10K races, hosted by the Suffield Parks and Recreation Department and the First National Bank of Suffield, start at Suffield Middle School.
