According to Wikipedia, Father's Day originated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913, but it took more than a half century before President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.
Father's Day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
