Accomplishment: Mason, a theater enthusiast and aspiring videographer, recently found out he is one of eight finalists in a national video competition called “Lights, Camera, Save.” The competition focuses on teaching young adults to save money for their futures.

Mason entered his video locally through the and won the first stage of the contest.

“I got a $250 savings bond, which was pretty nice,” he said.

His video was then submitted in the national competition. According to the First National Bank of Suffield's Web site, videos were submitted by 170 banks in 45 states.

Mason has entered many other video contests and won a few of them. This contest, sponsored by the American Banking Association Education Foundation, puts his work on a much larger stage.

Key to Awesomeness: A major criterion for the contest was showing creativity and Mason’s video stands because it is one of the few that is not a live-action film. Mason used Legos to tell his story and has created many stop-motion films and posted them on Youtube.

“A lot of people think it’s a pretty cool thing I do,” he said.

Inspired by an episode of the TV show iCarly, Mason became interested in stop-action videos. With some research and a little help on the script from his mom, Mason was able to make it to the finals with his 90-second take on the importance of saving.

His favorite subject in school is math. When asked what he wants to do after high school, Mason said: “I’m going to apply to college and go into acting or directing.  Over the summer, I went to Red Door Theater and took an acting class. It was pretty fun.”

He will find out on March 1 if he has been chosen as the winner of the contest. You can see his video here.

This week's Whiz Kid was nominated by: Lisa Coatti

Disclosure: Mason Beiter is the son of Suffield Patch columnist and Moms Council member Cami Beiter. Cami did not advocate for her son to be featured. While his nomination came from fellow Moms Council member Lisa Coatti, Cami and Lisa are not personally familiar (yet!). Lisa, and Suffield Patch, felt his accomplishments were worthy of special recognition.
