Truck Hauling Mulch Cited for Faulty Brakes
BRD,LLC subcontracts with AshBritt, Inc., which does debris management services for the state of Connecticut.
A West Suffield-based company that subcontracts to AshBritt, Inc., which does debris management services for the state, is facing numerous citations after officers discovered the truck had a false license plate and was operating despite several deficiencies.
Avon police towed the truck owned by BRD, LLC, out of service late last week after discovering a false license plate, faulty brakes and an air bag leak during an inspection. The truck was hauling mulch westbound on Route 44 to a destination in Avon, police said. Police pulled the truck over and inspected it on Simsbury Road.
The truck was placed out of service and towed, police said. The driver was cited with improper use of a marker or registration and towing an unregistered vehicle.
Lt. Kelly Walsh, the police department’s public information officer, said the truck was stopped by Officer Susan Kassey, a certified truck inspector for the Avon Police Department. Kassey conducted the inspection on site and found the violations, Walsh said.
According to a police report, the truck had three defective brakes and the airbag suspension system was compromised. The truck’s cross-member was rotting and one of the airbags was found leaning against the frame on the undercarriage of the truck and was leaking air.
The truck’s license plate was also registered to a different motor vehicle, police said.
BRD is a subcontractor for the Florida-based company AshBritt, Inc., which is under contract with the state to conduct debris removal from various state roads. AshBritt was awarded the contract for debris management services in 2008, according to the state contracting portal, and the company is scheduled to continue work through June 30, 2014, when the contract expires.
